Cooma

Cooma’s reputation as Australia’s most cosmopolitan rural centre was brought about by its establishment in 1949 as the headquarters for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme. Today, visit the Snowy Hydro Information Centre to experience the scheme hands-on.

The historic Avenue of Flags (main photo, left) in Centennial Park represents the people who came from around the world during the 1950s to build Australia’s greatest feat in engineering.

The Lambie Town Walk, and the Cooma Monaro Railway’s heritage railway station and vintage rail motor rides, allow visitors to experience a rich history reaching back to the mid 1800s.

East of Cooma, across the treeless plains, the flora, gorges and waterfalls of Wadbilliga and Deua National Parks are quite stunning. The Murrumbidgee River flows from Kosciuszko National Park close by Cooma and to the ACT, offering opportunities for picnics, riverside bushwalks and fresh water fishing.

Cooma’s art and craft galleries are many and include the Raglan Gallery on historic Lambie Street, the Little Gallery in the Hain Centre as well as private studio galleries.

For more information, directions and literature visit Cooma Visitors Centre, next to Centennial Park.
